Chuseok : major harvest festival in Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the August of the lunar calendar

 

추석이나 명절에 쓸수 있는 표현들을 배워보는 시간이다.

우리의 추석 뿐만 아니라 외국인과 얘기할때 우리의 명절에 대해서 알려줄수 있도록 나만의 문장을 만들고, 상대 나라에는 어떤 명절이 있는지, 무엇을 하는지를 영어 문장을 만들어서 나만의 문장으로 해두면 유용하게 쓸수 있을 것이다. 

 

1. The Chuseok holidays 추석연휴 
   during the Chuseok holidays 추석연휴동안

 

A big holiday is coming up.  큰 연휴가 다가오고 있어.

There's a big holiday coming up. 큰 연휴가 다가오고 있어.

What are you doing druing the Chuseok holiday? 너는 추석연휴동안 뭐하니?

Do you have any plans during the Chuseok holidays? 너는 추석연휴동안 어떤 계획이 있니

 

 

2. go (and) see ~ 뵈러 가다 ( = 고향에 내려가다) 

 

I'm going to go and see my parents. 나는 나의 부모님을 뵈러 갈거야.

I'm going to go see my parents during the Chuseok holidays. 나는 추석연휴동안 나의 부모님을 뵈러 갈거야.

 

 

3. get together 모이다

 

My family and my relatives are going to get together. 나의 가족과 친척들은 모두 모일거야.

I'm going to get together with my family and relatives. 나는 나의 가족과 친척들과 함께 모일거야.

Everyone is going to get together at my uncle's place in Busan. 모든 사람들은 부산에 있는 나의 삼촌집에 모일거야.

※ Usually, we make a lot of food and there's a big feast. 보통 음식을 많이 만들고 큰 잔치를 벌려요.

 

4. sleep over / stay over 자고오다

I'm going to sleep over at my uncle's place during the Chuseok holidays.  나는 추석연휴동안 삼촌네 집에서 자고 올거야.

I slept over at my friend's place yesterday. 나는 어제 친구네 집에서 자고 왔다.

※ The women do most of the work and the men just sit around and talk. 여자들이 대부분의 일을 하고 남자들은 앉아있거나 얘기를 한다.
※ I hate this kind of tradition! but, I don't really have a choice. 나는 이런 전통이 싫지만 내가 선택할수 있는게 없다.
※ I can't do anything about it. 나는 어쩔수가 없다.

5. it takes... (얼만큼) 걸린다.

 

It takes 3 hours. 3시간이 걸린다.

It took 5 hours to get to Busan.  부산까지 5시간이 걸렸다.

 

6. get sick 몸살이 나다

 

After we came back, she got sick. 우리는 돌아온후에 그녀는 몸살이 났다.

I'm really tired. 나는 정말 피곤했다.

I'm really exhausted after the Chuseok. 나는 추석후에 정말로 지쳤다. 피곤했다.

 

 

[나만의 문장 만들기]

 

In Korea, there is the Chuseok, which is similar to Thanksgiving day. The Chuseok is the 15th of the lunar calendar.
Every family and their relatives get together the same place which is grandfather's house. There is a lot of food and have a big feast. Usually, women do most of the work and the men just sit around and talk. I hate this kind of tradition but, I can't do anything about it. So, after the Chuseok, many women get sick. But nowadays the young generation is changing a lot. They do work altogether.
